    City life has dragged me into that most cliche of pleasures… Saturday mornings.

    Waking up with the sunshine and nowhere to be, it’s like a drug. I lay back in bed with the winter sunshine burning my eyes and my brain swaying at the rush of so few decisions.

    Shoes on, pants, find the camera and out the door. I found myself squeezing off shots before I even got to the beach. There were solid lines pushing out to the horizon.

    Big Thursday – on the beaches

    Nathan Odonell is an old friend of Le Sunshine’s from the heady days and long nights of living in Byron Bay. These days we’re both lurking in Sydney, trying to find a taste of salt wherever we can. Nath shares a penchant for looking at waves through a lens so when I saw the gems he’d captured from a stella Thursday some weeks ago, I thought it best to convince him to share them with us all… enjoy.

    It was the 10th July 2014 and we knew it was on, we could smell it. We were up at dawn and got to South Narrabeen at 6.30am . The tide was high, the smell of coffee mingled with the heavy odor of awe and anticipation as we watched  two guys and a jet ski dodging heaving sets.

    Julian Rocks, it’s a tiny, rocky pyramid that breaks up the view out to sea from Byron Bay. Every surfer’s contemplated paddling out there at some time or other, but it’s just that bit too far, mythically out of reach.

    About 12 months ago there was a tasty little beach break down at the river-mouth. Only a handful of us knew about it and every morning, just after dawn, we’d all paddle out, conspirators to that most unique treat, uncrowded, glassy peelers. And… that’s where I first met Nich Zalmstra.

    Film, Friday Hut Road and A Modern Marriage

    Shooting with film is so infuriating but so satisfying. The time it takes to finish a roll and to get it developed forces you to be spare with every shot and it ensures you’re frothing by the time you get the prints in you hands. Unfortunately it also means my stories come through a little late.
