Motel Mexicola, Bali
Motel Mexicola is a technicolour taqueria in the heart of Oberoi in Bali.
It’s the brain-child of the crew behind Bucket List (Bondi) and Rojo Rocket (Avoca) and there’s no shortage of sea-side influence. The ever affable host Adrian is in attendance most nights and does his best to make everybody feel very welcome. His enthusiasm is infectious.
It’s a sprawling courtyard with a fountain and everything is hand-painted in primary colours. There’s rough rattan shutters with smiling motifs of fruit and skulls. There’s wrought-iron arm chairs and discreet booths and a healthy cocktail list.
People are dressed casually and sprawled on day-beds and they are all clutching margaritas in plastic cups that perspire as the ice melts in the tropical heat.
Upstairs and inside there’s a shrine to the deity of cool. There’s a pyramid of tequila and so much kitsch you’ll want to curl up and dream of the future’s past. It’s a Latin fiesta and the local staff have adapted to it with big smiles and eloquent accents.
The menu is simple and pricey; but the tacos are divine, the ceviche is tangy and tender.
You can go there to catch up with an old friend and watch beautiful people parade through the courtyard. Or you can take a big group of people and shout CHEERS and get as rowdy as you like. Or you can go alone…sit at the bar…smoke Sampoernas and laugh with the bartenders under a full moon.
