Stand-up Paddle Boarding Yoga – Gili Trawangan

Stand-up paddle boarding… it’s the scourge of surf breaks everywhere. Like boats with drunken captains they’re a danger to all involved. But… when the water is flat and when you have a yoga instructor handy, well… then you might just have a whole lot of fun!

The calm waters of Gili Trawangan would be perfect; plus we had the ever hospitable Anna Durward on hand to be our yogi.

Hiring boards on the beach was easy enough. The rental guy was interested to hear that stand-up paddle boarding is getting more and more popular in Australia. I told him many beginners try to use them in big waves, he laughed with eyes wide, “they crazy!” I nodded agreement.

We had a group of six women and one Englishman. I don’t mean to single out his heritage but his radiant white skin stuck out against the deep bronze of the Scandinavian and Asian girls. His pallor had been a burden in Bali, it sang out to the traffic police, a beacon to be pulled-over and fleeced for whatever fine they could come up with. The local lads that were watching with me from the shore were equally amazed, they prefer light skin, we all want what we can’t have I guess.

I agreed to shoot photos while Anna put the crew through their paces. They would paddle up stream and once in formation they would follow her lead and assume the position. There were some solid warrior poses and a shaky bridge or two and downward-dog acted as an effective static pose to bring everyone into time. It looked difficult but all managed to stay upright, most of the time.

Yoga

Yoga is a meditative process that engages both the body and the mind, it seeks balance between the two opposing forces. And by putting your body on a paddle board, out on the water, you most certainly add another layer of challenge to maintaining your balance!

To finish-off the session there was a resonant omm and there were smiles all round.
